Make your case LEBRON or KOBE -- who is better and why

Personally, I think Lebron is better than Kobe. He gets more rebounds, more assists and more points than Kobe. Even the Cavs last year gave the Celtics a better run for their money than the Lakers. Finally, I would argue that the Lakers without Kobe would be much better than the Cavs without the Lebron.

i don't think so 08-09season if lakers without kobe i think lakers can't win to the final competition. One thing kobe is guard lebron is forward pisition not same please...!!! i argue that if position of kobe change to the forward he still can take 6-8 rebound in one game and don't forget kobe already 30 years old lebron just 24 years old

zafar said...

first of all lebron is yunger than kobe and already is better in my opinion.u really cant compare a 24 year old with a 30+ year old. just think how good lebron will be when he is at kobes age. right now lebron has much better stats than kobe so there u have it.

!!GO CAVS!!

kobe DOES NOT rule! he hasn't won an NBA championship wherein he's the finals MVP. Shaq made it happen back then when he was still a laker, not kobe. no matter how you argue that he's not a ballhog, the plain truth is HE IS! Well, not just a ballhog but a selfish kind of player. Well, I guess you've watched last season's finals. There losses were his doing. If Pau weren't traded to Los Angeles during the season, kobe would have immediately kissed his finals bid bye bye! he's not as valuable to his team as you kobe fans proclaim him to be! coaches and teammates now better than any other person not in the team so why not hear them every postgames? if you do, surely you'll be hearing praises for lebron a thousand times more than kobe! wake up you all!

I read several of the comments, here a few thoughts:

To Kobe ( and Zafar): You have a point, it's not completely fair to compare a guard versus a forward. However, I don't agree with the age argument. Kobe has played as well at 30 as he did at 24.

To Colby: I am not accusing Kobe Bryant as a ball hog. I don't think Lebron sucks and I don't thin D-Wade is better than Lebron.

Gagan Virdi -- Are you texting in your comments? Your grammar does need some work. I did see the game that Kobe scored 81 and it was unbelievable. I also saw a Game 5 playoffs game between the Cavs and the Pistons in which Lebron was equally as impressive. I think Lebron also makes his teammates much better. I think it's a stretch for anyone to say the Kobe is way better.

Reagan -- I think your comments were very valid. I think after this season more people will wake up

Reagan said...

Thanks, Matthew. It's relieving to know there is somebody else who knows and understands fully well what he's talking about. It's just so frustrating to read "kobe makes his teammates better" comments! Yeah, kobe is beyond ordinary. I'll give you that. But he is self-centered. Unless he fully understands that basketball is a team sport, he will (nay, HE CAN'T) win another NBA championship. But don't get me wrong. I don't want to crucify kobe. It's just that I really feel that it's such a waste for him not to change for the better because only then can he be given the right to be compared to my idol, MICHAEL JORDAN! Lebron is getting there and, with his age,is even a threat at surpassing MJ if he starts winning the hardware! MJ makes his teammates not just better, but the best that they could be. That's his secret for winning so many hardware! I hope kobe reads this for him to realize that! Lebron understood this way before he even entered the big league.
Anyway, MERRY CHRISTMAS YOU ALL! HAPPY NEW YEAR, IN ADVANCE!

kobe is better
lebron has better stats coz he plays for a worst team.
they would be worst off becoz they are not as good.
LA would be ok
becoz they are a good team (get it…)
la have a sweet Starting 5 and deeppest bench in the nba.
there for kobe doesnt need to do as much.. he can but taht would be not being a greater team mate, as he is ("OMG KOBE IS A HOG...")
and yess he is a foward its his job to rebound...
and if u watch the the cavs..
as their PG Mo is a tru SG/Scoring Point Guard
Lebron has to run the point
so he racks up some asts. kobe has a gr8 team so isbt forced to do that
but wen he is he comes up big 15 asts. vs. Washington 02/12/02 (wen he had to run PG as he was injured)
and further more kobe is capable of scoring 81..
so overall lebron good but he has no MVP... and wont till CAVS set him up with a real PG like D Williams or a steve nash... in other words lebron james is leavin and he will thats right he will go to new york and they will sign him and others hopfully a steve nash
and then he will win MVP of the NBA
like kobe..
please respond...

Thanks for your comments Nick.

You bring up several interesting points. I agree that if Lebron and the Cavs had an excellent true point guard that the Cavs would be better and Lebron would have a better shot at the MVP.

You also make a valid point that one of the reasons Lebron's stats are better than Kobe is because he has weaker players around him; therefore needing to do more. Your point is if the Lakers had weaker players, Kobe would simply score more, rebound more and dish out more assists.

However, I don't agree with you on everything. I do believe Lebron has the potential to score 81 points. What I witnessed in a game 5 series against the Pistons, showed me when Lebron is on fire no defender or defenders can stop him. Will he ever score 81 in a game? Maybe not, but I expect to see several 60+ point performances and wouldn't be surprised to see a 70 point performance before the end of his career.

Finally, the biggest reason why Lebron currently deserves the MVP over Kobe is that the Cavs have a better record than the Lakers. (with a worse team) Lebron has escalated the Cavs more than Kobe has escalated the Lakers. Even though the Cavs are in the East, the East is much stronger this year. We will see by the end of the season, but I believe Lebron will be voted MVP hands down.

"east is still the east" -- what's your point??? hey, nick, do you know how to read standings? the east is definitely much much stronger than the west this season! and what's with the "but no dunk contest winner" statement??? are you out of your mind? do you really think winning a dunk contest is enough to confirm he's better? Okay, let's make a clear example so your constricted mind may be opened even just a little bit... no disrespect to the Human Highlight, Mr. Wilkins, but it doesn't mean that having won the said contest many times make him better than Magic or Mr. Bird. One win an NBA MVP not because of one night, but for what he has done the ENTIRE SEASON! This leads us to you, bragging kobe's so-called 50+ points. The question is, was he CONSISTENT on making those numbers through out the season??? Or your just picking two or three out of a thousand??? I'll presume you read stat lines... Well, looking at this current season, were does your kobe stand??? The numbers don't lie, nick! While I was writing this, Lebron just had another triple double against chicago... what can you say to that??? let me comment also to your first post... You said Lebron is in a worse team than Kobe is so Lebron needs to do more... the question is, what's a "WORSE" team competing for the top spot doing there??? What does that tell you??? Man, you need to check your eyes! They are clouded by your emotions.

Reagan said...

Mathew, I don't think Lebron will ever score a 70. He's not that greedy. And he is so secured with himself that he doesn't need to prove that he can. Yes, he CAN but he WILL not.

To compare Kobe vs Lebron it,s absolutly crazy, look at the talent Kobe has, from his IQ, to setting, helping, shooting, dribling, panetrating, defending and making his teamates looks great around him, he has carried his young teamates for few years and now he could depend on them, vs Lebron he uses his big body to pushes people around, but his IQ and game setting or making is not there, he is a possibility in the futrue but not now against the best player in the world,,,,cheers.

Nick said...

Ace Madison said...

Albert-

Thanks for the feedback. I agree that Kobe has an incredible IQ for the game. However, I believe Lebron's teammates currently have less talent than Kobe's teammates. Lebron is doing an excellent job of making his teammmates and team look great. I don't think it's crazy to compare Lebron vs Kobe. I think they are the two best players in the league and many basketball fans enjoy comparing these two. I think Lebron uses his body and basketball IQ exceptionally well. I don't believe if Kobe replaced Lebron on the Cavs, that the Cavs would have as a good as record as they currently do. However, if you replaced Kobe with Lebron on the Lakers, I believe the Lakers would have the best record and go all the way to win the championship.

My opinion is DWade is MVP of League. Injury had him sidelined two seasons but he looks livelier than ever even with a real lackluster supporting cast. He owns the stats, his defense blows both Kobe and Lebrons out of the water. Plus DWade is only one who one the ring without major help from a supporting cast. That can't be said for Kobe or Lebron.Shaq and company where absent when he rallied to beat Dallas.

hey children!

i hate anti kobe!

bcoz im the # 1 fanz of kobe bryant the best player in the planet.

dont compare lebron to kobe,
kobe have 250 lbs, he play as a small forward. not kobe, kobe weighing 220 lbs. it is good weight to his position, by the way. bcoz lebron has a good assist and rebounds than kobe, bcos he have a too much field goal than kobe, and he is taller than my idol kobe bryant, the best player in the planet. please dont compare my idol to lebron, he is too young to him, and kobe is very prominent player, his defender per game is more than one. but lebron is only one defender anytym. he used his big body everygame to made a points. but not kobe, he use his speed, intelligence, agility, power and tallent. kobe is the best jump shooter and defender. and he can made a points in lo pose.

Adam said...

It's not that hard to know who's the winner for the 2009 mvp. It is going to be Lebron James. simple as that. He got 22 career triple doubles and he is only 24 years old. He and his team are currently the best record team in the conference along by being the ONLY nba team to achieve 20-0 at home! No one could even stop him, He always find his way around the hoop and if he decides to pass, he is an extremely great passer with a high IQ level. No player could achieve what he did in points, rebounds and assists since Oscar Robertson. So please, Kobe has nothing compared to Lebron James. He has proven it this year that his Hard work has paid off and even makes his coach look good, his teammates look good. he got a better team this year with Ben wallace, Mr z. , boobie gibson, delonte west, and mo williams just like michael jordan had scottie pippen. even last year in the semi finals Boston struggled against them. Think about it, Lebron is the MVP. No doubt.

Jason said...

At this point in the season D-Wade should be the MVP. Just look at stats and consider the fact that he is the only thing holding his team together. With a healthy D-wade, the Heat go to the playoffs. Without they finish well under .500. True, the same could be said for the Cavs, but honestly Lebron has much better and more experienced help than Wade.

PPG Wade 28.8 Lebron 27.6 Kobe 27.0
Reb Wade 4.9 Lebron 7.2 Kobe 5.6
Ast Wade 7.4 Lebron 6.6 Kobe 5.0

Based on the big 3 stats Lebron is just ahead of Wade with Kobe trailing.

STL Wade 2.28 Lebron 2.05 Kobe 1.32
BLK Wade 1.58 Lebron 1.28 Kobe 0.40
FG% Wade .473 Lebron .497 Kobe .476
FT% Wade .754 Lebron .777 Kobe .858
MPG Wade 38.3 Lebron 37.2 Kobe 36.4
TO Wade 3.73 Lebron 3.13 Kobe 2.93

Here's where it gets more complicated. True Wade's turnovers per game are the 2nd worst in the NBA, but part of that is the fact that he is singlehandedly running the team in the 2 spot. He's 3rd in the league for steals and in the top 25 for blocks(he's a guard and that's outrageous).

I think the Cavs would be bad w/o Lebron, but the Heat are worse w/o Wade.

Lebron IMO is obviously better than Kobe, but at this point in the season(which is far from over)Wade gets my vote.

Ace Madison said...

Jason-

Thanks for all your feedback and making your case for D-Wade. I agree his stats are highly impressive and I also agree that he could be a difference maker in whether or not the Heat make the playoffs. However, when comparing his entire stats to Lebron's entire stats, I personally give the slight edge to Lebron. I think Lebron's extra rebounds make up for any stat advantages that Wade has. But even if Wade's stats are slightly better than Lebron's, one has to look at team record. Whether it is fair or not, historically when picking an MVP your team needs to have a quality winning record. If the Heat end up with 50 wins, maybe D-Wade will pull off some MVP votes and that is a big maybe. I don't buy the argument that D-Wade is more important to the Heat than Lebron is to the Cavs. They are both exceptional players. One team is doing so-so and the other team is doing great. I think Dwight Howard would currently get more votes than D-Wade right now. As of 1/20/09 (great day for america -- congrats Barack), my current Top 5 for 2008-09 MVP. 1. Lebron 2. Kobe (right on his heels, and one can make a strong case that Kobe should pass Lebron after last night) 3. Dwight Howard 4. Chris Paul 5. D-Wade

Kobe is one of the greatest players ever to play in the NBA. Not quite as good as Michael Jordan, and not quite as good as Lebron James. The stastics will definitely back this up.
Statistics (This year / carreer)
Kobe is a little better at 3 point percentage. K(35.5 / 34.1) L(29.8 / 32.2)
Lebron is a little better at overall shooting percentage. K(47.2 / 45.4) L(49.3 / 46.9)
Kobe is better at free throw percentage. K(86.2 / 84) L(77 / 73.2)
Lebron is better at rebounding. K(5.6 / 5.3) L(7.2/6.9)
Lebron is better at steals. K(1.29 / 1.51) L(2.05 / 1.8)
Lebron is better at blocks. K(.36 / .57) L(1.27 / .84)
Lebron is better at assists. K(5.2 / 4.6) L(6.8 / 6.6)
Lebron is better at scoring points. K(26.4 / 25) L(27.9 / 27.4)
Summary
Considering all of these statistics, and considering the fact that Kobe has had better players on his team, I have to say that Lebron is MVP this year, and a little better than Kobe overall.

Ace Madison said...

Thank you Pastor Larry. Are you really a Pastor? I'm flattered and appreciate your comments. As a religious man are you offended that people call Lebron "The Chosen One" or refer King James to Lebron instead of the Bible? This is not a religious blog, but I am curious if you think God has a sense of humor.

Regarding the MVP debate, I think the stats you showed are very telling. I personally agree with you that Lebron is better than Kobe and it is difficult to argue with statistics. Every championship Kobe has won has been with Shaq and better players than Lebron has been able to play with. However, Kobe-lovers can make the case that no one is mentally tougher than Kobe. Kobe has an aura, confidence and toughness which stats can't illustrate. Although I believe Lebron is a slightly better player than Kobe, I think he still measures a little short in these intagibles that Kobe has. The debate will continue. I am hoping Lebron wins the MVP this year and the Cavs with the NBA Championship. Once that happens, more people with agree with us that Lebron is better than Kobe.

Pastor Larry said...

Hi Ace Madison:
Thanks for your comments. No, I'm not offended by those kinds of comments. I refer to him as King James myself. I also preach out of the King James Version of the Bible. I'm amazed at the level of talent in such a young man as Lebron. I'd like to see Kobe and Lebron play a game of one-on-one. I'm petty sure that Lebron would score every possession. (dunk)
Also, I think Kobe has been pretty selfish most of his career. He is doing better the last two years. He obviously didn't handle Shak getting so much credit.
If Phil Jackson were coaching the Cavs they would have probably already won 2 championships.

True that LeBron is putting better numbers, but that's because he does everything on his team (he even runs the ball as a forward)On the other way, the Lakers have players for everything, Gasol and Bynum=Rebounds, Fisher Bryant=Assists, etc... And Bryant does what he needs to do, if he has to score he does, he can pass the ball too, and even when he's shorter hes getting a lot of rebounds. CP3, D-WAde are better than LeBron too!!! Kobe MVP

Allen as All-Star means LeBron is MVP
Feb 5, 2009
Posted by Art Garcia, NBA.com
Ray Allen’s addition to the Eastern Conference All-Star team Thursday means more than just the ninth All-Star appearance for the venerable Celtics guard.

It cements LeBron James as this season’s MVP.

Selected by NBA commissioner David Stern to replace injured Magic guard Jameer Nelson in next week’s midseason classic, Allen gives the Atlantic Division-leading Celtics three All-Stars on the East team. (The Magic also had three before Nelson injured his right shoulder.)

The Lakers, Spurs, Suns, Hornets are sending two All-Stars each to Phoenix. The Lakers top the Western Conference and Pacific Division, and San Antonio leads the Southwest Division. New Orleans sits sixth in the West and Phoenix eighth.

As for the pacesetters in the Central Division, the Cavaliers have one solitary All-Star. Cleveland, it should be noted, has been jockeying with the Lakers and Celtics for the best record in the league all season.

And only LeBron is deemed worth enough by fan balloting, coaches’ voting and finally the commissioner’s decision to represent the Cavaliers on the All-Star team. This isn’t implying the fans, coaches or Stern erred by not including anyone else from Cleveland’s roster. Allen is a worthy and deserving All-Star.

But if LeBron is hitting the floor each night without All-Star-caliber help, and if Cleveland is among the league’s upper echelon, then he’s the MVP. This case isn’t based on numbers, though LeBron certainly qualifies there. It’s about Value, as in the Most Value.

The other serious MVP contenders -- Kobe Bryant, Dwight Howard, Chris Paul and Tim Duncan -- also have All-Star teammates to assist in carrying the load. Dwyane Wade is the key exception among MVP hopefuls, but Miami is in the lower half of the East playoff race.

This logic applied to Dirk Nowitzki a couple of years back. When the Mavericks were cruising along to the league’s best record in 2006-07, many questioned if Nowitzki was really MVP material even though he was the best player on the best team.

The original West All-Star team that season only included Nowitzki from Dallas. Injuries to four All-Stars greatly expanded the team, and Mavericks forward Josh Howard was one of the last two replacements named. Without the misfortune of others, Nowitzki would have been the lone Maverick in Las Vegas.

Of the top three leading MVP voter-getters behind Nowitzki that season, second-place Steve Nash had a pair of All-Star teammates and fourth-place Duncan had one. Bryant, in third, was Los Angeles’ only All-Star, but the Lakers were seventh in the West. LeBron happened to finish fifth that year.

Fast forward to 2009 and LeBron again doesn’t have All-Star support. Sure, Mo Williams had to be in the running for Stern’s injury pick and Zydrunas Ilgauskas is a former All-Star, but the reality is that neither is on the East team.

It’s just LeBron.

Your MVP.

Writer’s note: There’s much that goes into the MVP and still a lot of season left to figure out who is this season’s MVP. This blog entry just presents one argument based on the “perception” of LeBron’s help.

hey, matt!

who said we want to talk to you? you don't even know your english, boy! but because you annoyed me a bit with your comments, i'll give it to you. we don't hate kobe. ok ok ok. well, i'll just speak for myself. anyway, back to the topic. kobe's so overrated! you value so much kobe's 81 point performance? hell, if that's the case, are you saying mr. wilt is the greatest of all times for making a hundred points??? nah, i don't think so! stop acting like some old and broken jukebox! your so-called facts have already been mentioned by your kompadres many times already that i lost count. so stop it!

Joshua said...

This is a poll. dont go getting all high and mighty because you learned grammer in the 5th grade. people are trying to express their opinions and your over there attacking their english? first off Lebron James is a very good player. he did elevate the cavs to where they are right now. and that article about only one all star from the cavs is old. they had two. mo williams went so that is irrelevent. the lakers have the best record in the NBA. they went 6-0 on a road trip beating the cavs and the celtics. on the road once again. they swept both those teams this season gaining advantage in the finals. Kobe Bryant, although he doesnt have the stats to beat lebron i believe he is a better player. the lakers do not have to depend all on kobe. he shares the ball, he scores. if he scores to much he is a ball hogg. if he scores to little hes playing poorly? make up your damn minds. hes doing what he has to be doing right now. not to mention how fucking clutch is this guy in the 4th quarter? have you guys even watched lebron and kobe play against each other? kobe shuts him down. over. he also has the ability to score on james. thats my case.

"Kobe Bryant, although he doesnt have the stats to beat lebron i believe he is a better player. the lakers do not have to depend all on kobe. he shares the ball, he scores."

well, there you've said it! better yet, go on believing with your eyes closed, then. again, you've said it: kobe doesn't have the stats to beat lebron and neither is kobe that depended upon by his team as much as lebron is with his team. so what's your point? yah, he shares the ball. maybe a couple. come on! look at his stats! he didn't beat lebron in scoring nor passing or what other stats you might come up to!

since you've shared what you believe, let me share mine: the lakers go were pau gasol goes (up or down, whichever you like). isn't it damn obvious? hey, you were not in contention for the top spot last season when pau wasn't arround! and yet, with pau in your team, you were whipped by the mighty boston in 6 while they barely survived lebron in 7 AT THEIR OWN TURF! so shut hell up!

Reagan said...

jason,

i feel you, man. wade is really awesome. with the same size, i see the young MJ in him - very strong going to the hoop, exciting, sweet jump shots, a crunch player, and a very good defender. i think he is a better revival for lebron than kobe is in winning the MVP this season.

Joshua said...

Dude. Once again. who the hell cares grammer grammar im glad you payed attention to your english teacher wooptie do. but obviously not alot in your gym class. that was last year. and this year. tell me, who is in the top spot? out of the top three cavs lakers and celtics who swept who? my point is that kobe throughout the season has been an all around team player, he has the better team then lebron yes but when he has to step up (example, against lebron what happened? he shut his ass down.) swept the cavs kept lebron to a measly 23 points. with a fucking dislocated ring finger. im sorry but your living in a world where stepping up means nothing. and you quoted kobe saying lebron is mvp thats sportmanship look it up lebron scratches his head everytime he hears kobes name. he said it as well that kobes the best in the league. thats just sportsmanship. it shows their respect for each other

Reagan said...

boy,

stop putting your lousy words into my mouth. i never quoted kobe saying lebron is mvp! and you don't need to listen in gym class, dude. you need to do it! i think i can whip your skinny ass pretty well myself if we play one-on-one same as lebron would whip kobe's behind if they were to play mano-e-mano so shut the hell up!

you pointed something like kobe shutting down lebron for a measly 23 points. stop writing if you don't read stats (the right data are 16points, 8rebounds and 12assists against kobes 19points, 3rebounds and 2assists)! Now tell me who stopped who??? and don't give me that dislocated ring finger bullshit! a good sportsman never has an alibi, dude! the FACT is: he had help (there was help defense all game long)- ask pau and lamar! scoring 28 points while grabbing 17 boards is insane! he is not even your second best guy (pau is the 2nd best)! didn't you watch the interviews? if you did (just to refresh your very unreliable memory), well, what did lamar say?

and don't be so damn caught up with what kobe or lebron say for each other - there's showbiz in it! just read the stats!

Think about it, during the all stars who shined? amoungst all of the fucking superstars in this league you know who was a standout? kobe bryant. in the olympics who did they go to for clutch plays? bryant. i think it speaks to his character as well as his skills that even though we have all of these amazing people in this league when they need clutch they go to kobe. not lebron.

well, i am so damn glad that you felt i was being rude to you because i really was. don't go on telling me how i should treat somebody like you with respect when you yourself couldn't give that to others. show some respect. i'm gonna make you my son if you don't.

during the all stars, kobe doubled shaq's fieldgoal attempts yet both got the mvp (in case you've got an amnesia of some sort for not including shaq). amongst your so-called "fucking" superstars, kobe had the most attempts and he clearly was a ballhog that day, consuming more than half of every shotclock with the ball in his hands (when he's on-court, of course). in the olympics, was there really a need for clutch plays??? hell, if i recalled it correctly, most of the games (if not all) were blowouts. okay, just to satisfy you, let's say they had clutch plays, they don't go to kobe because they wanted to go to kobe in the clutch. kobe wanted the ball so he did. end of story.

This was recently posted by Rob Peterson on NBA.com. Kobe surpasses Lebron for the NBA MVP RACE

http://www.nba.com/2009/news/features/rob_peterson/02/27/kobe_tops.mvp.20090227/index.html

Reagan said...

yeah, matt... damn, he had a good week. going 11-1 after missing bynum catapulted him to the top. i figure, it would be more than just one week (contrary to what rob anticipated) that he will remain in that spot, with lebron's 1st zero-assist performance in a loss at houston. let's see what will happen in boston this friday - that would be a big factor for next week.

Bill said...

Too many of you people are arguing about who the best individual player is. Kobe is a better all around player. Anyone with an IQ higher than 90 knows that without question. But putting that aside, there's also no question that Lebron is a better MVP candidate right now.

The MVP question is drama that the NBA uses to stir up interest. The race isn't actually as close as they would have you think. Kobe is the best, there's no question, but the Lakers could make a damn good run without him. The Cavs without Lebron James would be a disaster.

Selder said...

Sorry Kobe fans he is good but his reign has come to an end. The future of basketball is Lebron. Plus he is a way better person on and off the court then Kobe will ever be.

i'd like to share this article by Rob Peterson regarding his decision of dropping lebron to 2nd place in the r2mvp:

kobe bryant is the best player in the nba. he has all sorts of dominant guards to go against such as dwayne wade, allen iversonand others, while lebron has no forwards that he has to worry about other than tayshaun prince. also im sure that youve all seen that lebron averages three to five min more than kobe and if you all know kbe he can score alot in that time period. therefore kobe bryant should win mvp

Reagan said...

i don't think so, gilbert. according to efficiency ratings, lebron is #1. Here is the list:

Rank Playern Eff48m Eff
1. Lebron James 38.98 30.39
2. Chis Paul 36.71 28.84
3. Dwayne Wade 35.62 28.37
4. Dwight Howard 36.14 27.19
5. Tim Duncan 35.27 25.64
6. Kobe Bryant 33.42 25.30

As you can see, Kobe is not even in the top 5.

MAN CHECK THIS OUT, I give Lebron his props the man is a beast, BUT the dude is 6'9 270 + pounds of pure muscle, shoot he better be getting more rebounds than 6'7 205 pound Kobe, and of course he has a 48+ fg% he drives it in most of the time because he is so powerful and half the time the opposing team gets out of his way, wouldn't you? If lebron was 6'7 205 pounds he would not be doing what Kobe Bryant has done and continues to do in the nba. Kobe Bryant does not have the body to FORCE his way to the basket, it's more difficult for Kobe to put up the numbers that he puts up. He is not 6'9 270 pounds yet he has done things that nobody has done in the nba. The 81 point game could of been done 4 other nights,,kobe bryant had 55, 62, 52, and 56 points in the 3rd quarter in which he did not play for the fourth. Shot a lot yes,,,but made more than 60% of his shots. And somebody please look at the playoff games that the Lakers won during their 3 peat run, Kobe Bryant had monster games through every one of their wins. Shaq did not do it by himself He had Kobe. Look at Lebron play now,,,see how he uses his strength and body to bully his way to such numbers, then look at kobe play and notice that he doesn't have that advantage, notice that he has to cross over, studder step, step back, pump fake, spin around, dribble behind his back, fade away, head fake, change speed, and do every single move in the book in less than a sec to think about it just to do something that is so easy for Lebron to do because of the body God has given him. Kobe Bryant is the Best basketball player in the world, Lebron better put up great numbers because that would be a waste of body size and muscle if he didnt.

first of all. i am a foreign student studying at USC from South Korea. I have never been interested in watching NBA so consistently until this year but since my roommate and suitemates are so crazy about NBA I started watching NBA games as much as possible. Okay, here is my opinion who will win the MVP: Kobe Bryant. I have been watching all of Laker's and Cav's games. I know LJ is such a great player as his stats tell, definitely better than KB. But, I don't care what the stats say about KB and LJ. I think KB is more deserved to win the MVP than LJ does. One, KB knows when he has to take care of the ball and scores, whenever his team needs him, he comes out of the bench and does his job. Playing time for KB is way shorter than LJ. Two, LJ seems to struggle playing against good teams. I know Cavs are playing amazingly this year, but Cavs and LJ lost to Lakers one in LA and one in their home court. Even a week ago, Cavs and LJ lost to Celtics even without Kevin Garnet. Whatever the stats say about KB and LJ, I don't believe in that not because it might prove the point that LJ is better than KB, but Kobe just plays so well constantly throughout the year even against good teams, and Lakers is the only team beat Cavs and Celtics in home and away game. Sorry for the grammatical errors and thank you for reading this post.

Matthew said...

Thanks for your point of view Daniel. I agree that there is an intangible quality about Kobe when watching him. He seems to know what he needs to do and when he needs to do it.

Here's my take right now. It's still a two person race. Kobe and Lebron. D-Wade is getting a lot of attention and there is an argument for Dwayne Wade for MVP. His numbers are very similar to Lebron's stats, and he is currently leading the scoring title. Also, last year Miami had a horrible record while D-Wade was out. Not that D-Wade is back, he is single biggest reason in helping the Heat win 30+ more games this season. Finally, both Kobe and Lebron has played with an All-Star this season. D-Wade is the only All-Star on his team. With all that being said, I believe Dwayne Wade has zero chance of winning the NBA MVP Race this year. I am amazed that nearly half the voters believe Wade has over a 30% chance to win it. Trust me -- he could get a few votes, but he won't win it this year.

It's down to Lebron and Kobe and they both have a strong case. Lebron's chances would have been better if Mo Williams was not selected to the All-Star game. It could very well come down to which team ends up with the best record. If the Lakers end up with a better record than the Cavs, than Kobe will pick up a few extra votes. The argument is he would be on the best team and he is the Lakers best player. If Cleveland has the best record, it has to go to Lebron. I personally still think it should go to Lebron. He clearly has the best effiency stats and the best efficiency stats per 48 minutes. The other small factor that could help Lebron is that Kobe won it last year. For someone who thinks it is a toss up, may vote for Lebron since Kobe won in 2008.

Matthew said...

I agree with #1 so far, I disagree with Wade as #2

lebron averages more points and can get to the rim.

just as i was writing this, lebron had 43-12-8 in beating the magics. kobe could only show a lowly 11-5-5 in a loss to the LOWLY sixers. i thought i heard somebody said kobe is a stopper. he can't even stop a lowly iguodala at the clutch. and speaking of clutch... i think i also heard somebody said kobe was a clutch. heck, he had more turnovers and misses than shots made in the clutch. so much expectations. tsk tsk tsk. now, the cavs are number 1. any questions???

Joshua said...

Reagan, i find it interesting how once the lakers drop under one win of the cavs. they both have the same losses. you hop on the bag wagon stating that they are the best team. while the lakers were on top you said that meant nothing blah blah. Lebron is doing his thing right now. Kobe seems to be in a 3 game slump. But i kid you not. You better wish your little heart out that the cavs dont meet the lakers, or the celtics in the final. because deep down inside you know in your heart that lebron clams up against great teams. the guy just does not have enough experience right now. to much pressure. But i give him props. that 3 game triple double was pretty nice =]

Ok, everyone that is posting anymore comments here for 2008-2009 season MVP needs to look at just this season and the whole entire season please. I am sick of reading posts about earlier seasons and just about the second half of this season. NBA MVP means that one is the best player in the NBA the year it is given out. Also, is looked at throughout the entire season, not just half or a few games. Please just think of who is doing overall better throughout the entire season. Thank you!

Kris said...

I'm not on here to bash LeBron or D.Wade because they are truly two future hall of famers. I'm just here to make the case that Kobe Bryant is M.V.P he was last year and I don't see anyone taking it this year either. Kobe has lead his team as a true leader should he does what it take to win the game. If it means scoring he can do that. If it means taking on the best player on the opposing time he can and does that. No one had to tell Kobe how to play. He already knows. That's a M.V.P He's a great basketball player. He puts in the time and the workout room. The last to leave the gym. He has injuries and not once has he complain he goes out there we the same drive and passion if not as much as anyone else in the league. He broke to great teams winning streaks the champs and the cavs. No he didn't do it by himself they did it as a team. I won't add all the things he's done in his career because its not about last year, its who the m.v.p should be this year. I wouldn't be surprise if D.Wade or LB won but to not say Kobe isn't worthy of getting the M.V.P make's 0 sense! I'll end my comment with a quote. " Love me or hate me; it's one or the other. Always has been. Hate my game, my swagger. Hate my fadeaway, my hunger. Hate that I'm a veteran. A champion. Hate it with all your heart. And hate that I'm loved for the exact same reasons." KOBE BRYANT

dubach said...

well, I am thinking of King James for MVP because he has been playing spectacularly all season long. he plays 2 positions for his team. also, LB made his team better than they are but also putting them on the top of the NBA record wise. These things are what make lebron James stand out to me.

Ryan said...

If you think Kobe is better than Lebron you are an idiot. D-wade is MVP

Matthew said...

This is the last place that I'm going to read where there will be Kobe fanboys.

They are just too stupid. One will even say HIMSELF, in THIS topic, that Lebron has better stats and more important to his team...yet call Kobe MVP. It's insane.

They try to argue that Lebron only gets assists because the Cavs need him to. Like it's a BAD THING! They need him to, so he does it. That's called MVP material.

James has more points, rebounds, assists, blocks, rebounds, steals, less fouls a game, and last time I checked...better field goal percentage.

Oh, did I forget to add that he's the only reason that the Cav's aren't one of the top 3 losing teams in the league? Where the Laker's would still do great without Kobe...yet the Cav's STILL have a better record than the Laker's.

Dwayne Wade deserves it more than Kobe, but I don't like the argument mostly because no matter what...the Heat are a bad team..with him or without him.

Kobe bryant is better than lebron james. kobe is 2 inches shorter and 50 plus pound lighter than lebron and Kobe shut lebron down in the meetings they had this year. Kobe is the most clutch player in the game. if the gameds on the line who do you want to have the ball? Lebron? i dont think so. lebron wont hit big shots in the clutch like kobe. kobe plays better defense when he wants to than lebron does. he's got more skills than lebron does. kobes been on the all nba defensive first team numerous times and lebrons never been. lebron only shoots in the mid 70% in free throws. kobe shoots in the mid 80's. yes lebron is physically stronger than kobe but kobes mentally stronger than lebron. honestly i think a healthy dwayne wade is better than lebron. and the only reason lebron gets more assist than kobe is bcuz he handles the ball and runs the offense more.. i think lebrons more concerned with his stats and trying to avg a triple double than winning. to kobe its all abou winning.. Lebron will never be on kobe's level. he will always be one or 2 levels below. if you were to ask lebron who he thinks is better he will gladly tell you kobe is the best in the world. now that i can agree with lebron on. KOBE IS BETTER THAN LEBRON> HANDS DOWN!!!!!!!!!!!!!

your statement just answered why lebron gets more assist reb and points cause he has to while kobe doesnt. Hes probably saving all his energy for playoffs so what happened last time wont happen again...you cant just look at stats and say there mvp then what about d'wade he has more points more steals more blocks then both kobe and lebron and i bet cleveland would do better then miami if both stars were taken out of there team...and wasnt it Kobe that led there team to break both boston and clevelands record breaking winning streak? wasnt it Kobe that led them to sweep in the regular season? yea they flunked last year in the finals but do you consider that team the same team as this year? c'mon man last year nobody even expected the Lakers to make it to the finals but they still did...KOBE MVP and im sure New York agrees. I think we should all slow down and think for a minute. Let's be honest...Lebrone will reign in the NBA, the question is when. We're in such a hurry that we see more than what is there. He's had two great seasons...that's it...not enough to dethrone a reigning king. Let Lebrone work on his list of accomplishments first, like Kobe was required to do before we could say his name in the same breath with Michael Jordan. The media is always in a hurry and they get everyone worked up...we true fans of the NBA must keep a level head. I look forward to Lebrone's reign, but today he is just the prince, Kobe Bryant is still King...for now.

I'm really getting sick and tired of lebron this lebron that!!! Don't get me wrong Lebron is a fantastic athlete and a good player, however basketball isn't just about dunks and athleticism. We really need to get off this Lebron bandwagon he is the Lil' wayne of basketball. I think this is very disrespectful to Kobe and all of the greats that came before him Kobe earned it!!! The NBA already branded this kid the next great one before he even played a single game in the NBA and already drawing comparison b/t kobe and Jordan. Kobe is the most complete player you will find in the GAME!!! PERIOD!!! hands down. Kobe PLAYS DEFENSE!!! and he shuts down his opponent, Kobe guards the team best player! Notice how I didn't say HELP DEFENSE! Lebron is a great help defender not a GREAT ON BALL DEFENDER! Watch the next time he plays and see if he will guard the teams best player he guards the role players so you know what that means he preserving himself on defense and when he gets on offense he's at full steam. Just ask Iverson who gives him headaches defensively. All of y'all guys thats on the Lebron bandwagon really shows how much y'all no about basketball. Need to go back to the archives and do your history. Rick Barry couldn't say it any better "LEBRON HAS NO FUNDAMENTALS!!!" Whatever you want Kobe has, he is one of the most fundamental players around!!! It's just sad how Kobe gets no respect give credit when credit is due! He is by far the most hated!!!

KOBE BRYANT IS THE BEST PLAYER IN THE LEAGUE AND UNTIL HE RETIRES LEBRON CAN'T BE MENTION IN THE SAME BREATHE AND THEN THE TORCH WILL PASSED ON THE SAME WAY DR. J PASSED IT TO MIKE !!!

I'm doing a forecast for this year's NBA MVP for my grad school economic forecasting class. The model I developed uses very simple statistical categories to forecast percentage probabilities of MVPs since 1980-81.

My model puts the odds of Lebron winning at about 80%. My model has predicted 20/28 winners. It has never missed a prediction with that high of probability. The model didn't pick either Steve Nash win, Malone over Jordan, Olajuwon over Shaq, or Erving over Bird. It has failed when the probabilities were close, but the model says that this year's vote wont' be close.

Lebron will win.

Matthew said...

I appreciate all the comments. I enjoy reading John's comments and I agree that we need to respect Kobe. However, I disagree that Lebron has "no fundementals". I get a kick out of Chuck who brings his statistical analysis that Lebron has an 80 percent chance of winning according to his model. I think some of the comments get off the question. We are not arguing who is better, we are debating who will win the NBA MVP Race this year! The factors will include the following: The tangible factors will include team wins and individual stats. Other factors will include the cast of other players on the team, leadership and how good the team is without him. There is also a sentimental or popularity factor that could make a small difference. Considering the Cavs have the best record in the NBA and Lebron has the best stats in the NBA (D=Wade's stats are very close) -- Lebron currently has the edge.

Matthew said...

Horse Race Analogy: The race is not over. I believe Lebron is leading the field by 2 1/2 lengths. However, Kobe was 4 lengths behind last week and is gaining ground on Lebron. The Cavs just had two awful losses. If the Cavs continue to lose and the Lakers continue to win, Kobe may beat out Lebron by a neck. D-Wade is 5 lengths back. (He has 3 MVP arguements -- he will win the scoring title, his stats are better than Kobe and arguably better than Lebrons, and last year his Heat only had 15 wins with him being on the bench) If Miami wins the rest of their games, and the Lakers and Cavs falter, D-Wade could beat both Kobe and Lebron by a nose. Dwight Howard, Chris Paul, Deron WIlliams and Brandon Roy may each get some top five votes, but they are so many lengths behind they can barely see the front runners.

The fact that he has drawn attention even before he has stepped on an NBA hardcourt speaks volumes of how special he is. And maybe you failed to notice, there’s the obvious “next” term. The next great one. Well, he is! Checkout how many records he has broken in his very young career! Man, he’s just 24, for crying out loud! Even the Big O is in awe at what this kid is doing! And what’s this statement that not until Kobe retires, Lebron can’t be mentioned in the same breathe with him? Are you out of your constricted and twisted mind???? Kobe is not that great! Unlike Kobe Lebron is just developing his 3 pt shot and his jumper. These are things that Kobe has always had. And one thing i hate that people say is that "Lebron is better because he gets more double-doubles". If Lebron is 6 foot 8 weighing over 250 pounds he better be gettin rebounds. Kobe also has better defense. which Lebron is also just developing this season. And also this season The Lakers and Cavs have played each other twice. And who won both games by at least 10 points......I thought so and in both games Kobe shut down Lebron on defense but Lebron couldnt gaurd kobe. So in conclusion Kobe is better no matter who wins MVP this year.

You proclaim kobe's gonna get his title... well, dream on it! Lebron is this season's MVP and clearly the best there is right now. Another rhetorical question for you, Joshua: Is there any better than the BEST??? PLAIN AND SIMPLE!!!

Just as what i said in my first post in this forum/blog:

WAKE UP, YOU ALL!!!

Joshua said...

First off if your not able to refrain from referring to people as morons you obviously are just blinded by your own opinion. Second off just because the Cavs got the top seed you started spouting off. But remember when lakers had it? OH that shit meant nothing right? your just nervous because your invincible cavs have a flaw. Lets just watch the playoffs and i know i wont be disappointed

Okay, who in this universe does not understand that Lebron James is MVP for 2009???? ALL the sportswriters pick Lebron as MVP, all the players pick Lebron as MVP, all the coaches pick Lebron as MVP, so apparently, there is NO ONE IMPORTANT left that matters, so, LEBRON IS MVP, plain & simple!!!! ANY questions, see me!!!

I don't wanna speculate as to who's a better basketball player, but Kobe is a better rapist HANDS DOWN!

I don't understand how people can just dismiss the stats that are factual proof that (this year) LeBron james is better. Some people say that Kobe doesn't have as good stats because he has a better team, but then doesn't that just show LeBron is better since he can take a worse team than Kobe and make them MORE successful?

Reagan said...

no comment to that, derek. but, hey! where are those kobe morons who branded kobe as a defensive genius??? if he really was a stopper as what you idiots proclaim him to be, then why is lebron 2nd to Superman for the Defensive Player of the Year honors??? Where is he in that category??? Wake up you all!!!

H*ll naw Kobe is way better because Kobe iz faster and smarter and he has more knowlage about the NBA and Kobe played the GREATESTS OF GREATS like MJ and Kobe scored a 61 point game at the garden and LeBron put up a pussy score because he only put up a 55 point game so yeah KOBE iz better they shouldnt even have this race to the MVP award jus give it to KOBE ight but im out so (GO KOBE)

GO LAKERS BABY #24!!!!

Zaheib said...

lebron does have better stats and he is defintely the most explosive player in the league... nothing but power behind this guy

as for kobe... he is a work of art, he can make any shot anywhere at any moment. kobe understands the game a lot more, he studies the game and knows what to do when. everyone's right when you say kobe's stats went down this year, but if you look at the rest of the team... everyones stats went up... and thats the kobe effect... watch him set up plays and get everyone open shots, and when his team cant do it... thats when he turns on and takes over and ends up getting 20 points in a quarter to end the game and get lakers the win. he's beyond just scoring as much as he can a game or getting as many rebounds or what not, he is now in a realm of his own - the only other player that resembles these qualities was MJ himself.

i've been watching both since both entered the league (huge fans of both guys) and i can tell you one thing for sure both are amazing. at this point i still think lebron needs to grow up a little more, but kobe my god he belongs in a museum for abilities that no other person in the nba has. you cant just look at the numbers... watch him play. he's not as big and powerful as lebron but he can still make any shot he wants against him even if its from half court when he's triple teamed.

by the way kobe versus lebron... we saw it twice this year... and we all saw who won both at the Q and Staples. Its not just a coincidence that lebron couldnt carry his team to beat kobe and his lakers at the Q... their only home loss (not counting the last home game because it was useless). lebron, still best to come... kobe, we're all living to see one of the greatest players the league has ever seen and we wont see anyone like him in a long time so lets appreciate it for the last few years... by then lebron will be a monster and there will be no doubt he will be the leagues mvp for multiple years.

Sweet Slayer said...

Lebron only gets alot of points because there's not much competition on the East that's that hehehehehehe West are monster players alot of good players are on the West and for the comment of DEREK: don't wanna speculate as to who's a better basketball player, but Kobe is a better rapist HANDS DOWN! Well at least kobe is a Player not only in basketball but also in chicks there you can't top dat he's got game not only he dodge that case he also tap dat ass!!!Hehehehehe now What? Ha...???? KOBE is the Best yahooooooooo

lizzard said...

in response to Zaheib's comments...I read your post & strangely enough, everything you said about Kobe applies to Lebron, I actually thought you were talking about Lebron!! you also say that Kobe can make ANY shot, even from half court, did you not see Lebron's amazing half court shot, at the buzzer, at half time,in the first playoff game?? I pretty much think that says it all!! Anything Kobe can do, Lebron CAN DO IT BETTER!!!

Reagan said...

what the hell's wrong with you, sweet slayer??? you would go to the extent of even praising kobe for his crime??? idiot! as for Zaheib.. Hey, don't act as though you are unbiased in your statements for both kobe and lebron when it's very obvious that you are also a kobe moron! wake up you all!!!

Lebron James is a great player, but Kobe is a much better player all around. He has the Veteran experience with the raw power of someone who is still relatively young. He is getting better with age. He knows how to get his team involved and knows how to make everyone better around him.

Lizzard said...

UMMM...NEE NEE & SUSANA, BEFORE YOU SPOUT YOUR MOUTH, I HAVE JUST 1 QUESTION... WHAT HAPPEDED TO KOBE" & THE LAKERS" LAST NIGHT WHEN THEY LOST & KOBE PLAYED LIKE CRAP??? SORRY... lakers beat cavs twice this were kobe held lebron at bay
kobe dropped 81 points with ease
whe kobe drops 30 or more they compare him to jordan
when lebron drops 30 or more they compare him to KOBE!
and magic johnson averaged more assist and rebounds than jordan did that make him better than him?
things to think about

Looking at the teams in both the East and West playoffs, it will only get interesting during the Conference Finals. Kobe will get his team easily to the West Conference finals as much as Lebron will in the East. But during the conference finals, it will really be interesting how these two men will fair.

Chase said...

kobe is better
lebron has better stats coz he plays for a worst team.

worst team, you say??? Playing for the "worst" team and making it clinch the homecourt advantage all throughout the playoffs says it all, dude! wake up!

i think kobe is the best compare to lebron,.base on experience in nba,.kobe, he got already is championship, but lebron he did not,.and kobe last 2008-2009 he got is first mvp,.but lebron not yet,.but lebron he a great player,.he bring is team to the finals without a shaQuil or kevin garnet,.that's the only difference between kobe and lebron,.but the two guy's you can compare to the legendary michael jordan,.they can bring there team to the finals..that's why in 2009 the only team that will meet to the finals are the lakers and cavs.!!!!

Daniel said...

Lebron is playing in an underrated team.
Mo is a very talented player, Varejao and Ilgaskaus are also good. Lebron is playing on a strong team!
Its not the worst!
Cleveland got the best record because of the cleveland team itself. And not because of lebron.
Mo must be very much credited for the Cavalier's best record.

The Beast said...

Kobe's a stud - But LeBron's better. Take Kobe off the Lakers, and they're still a playoff team - Odom & Gasol are both big-time players who would start on and be top 2-3 on any team in the league. Throw in Fisher, Aziza, Bynum, etc, and the Lakers are still one of the better teams out there. On the other hand, take LeBron off the Cavs, and they not only don't make the playoffs - They immediately become one of the worst teams in the league. Seriously - With props to Mo, how many of their players would you want on your team?

Throw in the fact the LeBron beat Kobe in every stat there is - points, rebounds, assists, fg%, steals, blocks - and his team had the best record in the league - and how can there be any argument?

hey guys, all of your thoughts are all correct.one thing that kobe is greater than lebron, if we deal with experienced. kobe is well experienced compared with lebron. kobe is known for his crucial shots and lebron does not.so guys, they're both mj's disciples and that's the truth. lebron needs more experience so that he could become kobe or mj. as of now i prefer kobe than lebron.

I dont get these people that say Cleveland is a bad team??? Did everyone forget the game of basketball is a TEAM sport??? Lebron cannot do it by himself. He is a leader. Kobe is a good player but he is all about himself. Just sit back and watch what the Cavs. Everyone hates on Cleveland. its time for us 2 get the respest we deserve. That team works hard!!! One Goal!!!!

irishangel7 said...

Lebron is Lebron! He is a leader. dont underestimate the rest of his team. the Lakers is a challage b/c we didnt beat them in the regular season. but i believe that the cavs as a team are determined and that when those 2 teams meet it is going down in the history books. i love my cavaliers and after watching every game i see a team!!! Kobe cares about Kobe. i love the game of basketball. and Kobe has always been a selfish player.i am sure Lebron could score 81 points but how is that getting your team involved????Go Cavs.

Hi guys

I’ve been following up this thread for some months and read all the posts. I’m from Europe and I work part-time as a sports reporter (also covering the NBA). I will present two analytical approaches in evaluating who should be the MVP based on his performance until NOW, in this season.

TOP-DOWN APPROACH:

- Let’s assume that the ‘value’ of a player, is total team value/performance minus the value of his teammates.
- Non-LBJ Cavs are much worse than non-Kobe LALs.. This is a no-brainer and whoever still argues the opposite is just overwhelmed with emotions, and probably a LALs fan.
- LALs have a better coach so this helps scale up the overall sum of individual performances and make them work as a team.
- Even though Cavs have the best NBA record in the regular season and the only team at the moment to be undefeated at the playoffs, let’s assume that value of Cavs and LALs is the same.
- Based on the above, LBJ deserves to win the MVP based on his performance until today.

BOTTOM-UP APPROACH:

- There are two elements to this, tangible and intangible value. Tangible is purely based on stats. Intangible is based on softer elements such as being a good team player, making the rest of the team look good, how many different things he can do in the game, level of passion, drive, experience, being a winner etc.
- In terms of tangible value, LeBron is a clear winner. This has been mentioned before, there is no question about this, numbers never lie.
- In terms of intangible value, there could be a huge debate.. LBJ definitely makes his teammates look better than they would if they did not have him in the team. On the other hand, I am not so sure that players like Gasol or Odom would do any worse without Kobe in his team, also taking into consideration that Phil Jackson is the coach. Kobe is definitely more experienced, LeBron brings more passion and energy into the team. He also can do so many different things in the game. It’s not that Kobe doesn’t do them because of Pau or Odom. He is not physically capable to do so (i.e. he is not as tall and strong as Lebron). In terms of being a “winner”.. well, until today I would say that it’s a tie. Overall, I would say that the “intangibles” part is a tie, maybe slightly favoring LBJ.
- Overall, taking both tangible and intangible elements into account, LBJ is a winner on this one as well.

Analytical approaches are always the best when it comes to such debates. And LBJ seems to be the clear winner until TODAY.

We definitely have to see how Cavs and LALs perform on the playoffs / finals, because the “winner” element will become important here.

Another reason why LeBron has probably a small advantage on being the MVP: It is clear that if the Cavs win the championship, LeBron will be the MVP. But could you say with the same level of certainty, that if LALs win the championship, Kobe will be the MVP, instead of LeBron? I am not so sure.

In terms of which player is improving or is comparable to MJ etc.. This has nothing to do with MVP. MJ or Wilt are being evaluated now after having finished their careers. Kobe has reached his potential, being 30+.. he is probably not comparable to MJ even now. Lebron still isn’t comparable to MJ, apart from having the potential to do so and being no.23...of course you never know what could happen in a couple of years. But he is still 24, and is improving his game significantly every year in many aspects (i.e. defense). So, let’s put MJ comparisons aside for the moment, they are not material today. In terms of Kobe vs. LeBron, probably LeBron this season has reached Kobe’s level and is probably a little better, and he is definitely going to escalate more in the coming years.

Last but not least, in terms of popularity overseas (which has nothing to do of course with who should be the MVP), since I remember reading a few postings on this. Lebron is already much more popular than Kobe in Europe (especially in countries where basketball is very popular like Spain, Italy and Greece), and is considered a better player. Of course, in terms of popularity, not even close to MJ, or Dominique Wilkins (that played in Europe for 1 year). Wade is popular in Europe only to people that follow NBA, but not so much to the average sports fan in general.

Matthew said...

I appreciate everyone's comments. However, I very much appreciate the thought and logic of your lasting posting. We will know the winner of the 2008-09 NBA MVP within two weeks and I am confident you will be correct. This season Lebron has the edge on Kobe. I will be curious how much of a landslide the voting will be. I speculate Kobe will get several 1st place votes and D-Wade will pick up a couple, however Lebron will be the clear winner.

Are you kidding me LeBron James is 50 times better den Kobe Bryant. Kobe is dodo as ever. Come on now. Jebron only 24 years old and straight ownin the whole nba. He leads the nba in triple doubles. Not in point though. And datz alright cuz dwade jus get his lucky shots in. Also LeBron number 2 for ppg. Kobe number 3. And datz why LeBron is better den Kobe

The rumor today is that Lebron James WILL BE NAMED MVP THIS AFTERNOON AT HIS ALMA MATER IN AKRON & he is THE ONLY PLAYER WHO DESERVES THIS AWARD!! CONGRATS LEBRON & CAVS, NOW BRING US A CHAMPIONSHIP TO CLEVELAND!!!

Lebron!!!!!!! he is jst BETTER. maybe less experience but he has much more potential dan kobe even though kobe is good

It looks like Lebron James has run away with the MVP award this year. I personally think he deserved it two other years also. But, this year is not even debatable. Even Kobe and D. Wade agree. Cleveland has won 7 in a row in the playoffs, and all by double digits. If Lebron stays healthy, he will break many more records.
He shows great maturity by the way he plays the game. He makes his teammates better.
I hope Lebron is a Christian. If so, I'd like to challenge him to a game of one-on-one in heaven. Since we will all be perfect there, it will have to be a tie. (Just having a little fun. Ha!)

Curt&Vic said...

Lebron James is obviousbly the better player. Look at the way he plays with no team. I mean Kobe gets a bunch of guys on his team that are beast and Lebron is working with virutually nothing. Lebron James also is not as expirenced commpared to Kobe so in the years to come he may become better.

it would have been very interesting if lebron were in the finals... like i said, conference finals is where "interesting starts." sadly, lebron's ungodly performances weren't still enough. would love to see him as a cav next season though.

Matthew said...

Although Lebron won the MVP award in 2009, Kobe made a statement last year by winning another championship. I think Lebron will continue to dominate in numbers. However, the Lakers are going to be the team to beat in 2009-10. I personally think Lebron is better than Kobe, but until he wins a championship, there is no reason to debate the issue.

Hey people: stats don't lie, as it proves enough(points per game, assist, rebounds, block shots)-- name it, these are the things that Lebron have had proven. He's a better all-around player than Kobe. I used to play basketball and has won 2 MVP's "though of course Am not an NBA player" -- and those are what I'd admired with the King. I agree that Kobe perhaps is a good shooter (but not as good as MJ the icon), but as you know Kobe -- he's a player to go shoot-it-first before passing (the likes of AI). Unlike, King James he is so amazing -- he's very intelligent player, he often creates a move to free-up his teammates to have an easy basket, in most cases he passes the ball when needed. Imagine scoring HIGH in every games he played with lot of assist per game (to include steals & block shots), and he did this consistently. Does any other player have those unslefish way of playing basketball? This man deserves to be the King. Look, take a deep breath -- then try to look all the good players of the NBA (most of them are the usual shoot-it-first player, a one-man-show type of player, trying to be a hero at times) unlike the King he often involved his teammates. At his young age -- his leadership and basketball skills is so amazing. He's like Michael Jordan when it comes to scoring, and a Magic Johnson or Jason Kind when it comes to assist. Oh my, common let's analyze well the player's way of playing basketball. Ask theose NBA hall of famers - and they may agree with these stuffs.
